Most of the time, a Google Business Profile does not show up for one of a few reasons: it is not fully verified, it has been suspended, there is a duplicate listing, or the details do not match what Google sees elsewhere. Sometimes it is showing, just not where you are searching from, because Google ranks local results partly by distance. Check properly first, then work through the causes below in order.

How do I check if my profile is really showing?

Many owners think they are invisible when they are not. Searching from your own phone, while signed in, does not tell you what customers see. Do these three checks instead:

  • Search your exact business name in a private or incognito window, with your town after it. If your profile appears, Google has it. The question is then how you rank, not whether you exist.
  • Open your profile dashboard. Sign in to the Google account that manages the profile and search "my business" on Google. Look for any notice that says pending, unverified, suspended or disabled.
  • Use Google Maps on a phone in your area. Search for what you do, like "plumber" or "nail salon", the way a customer would, from a few spots around town.

If your name search finds you but your service search does not, skip ahead to the section on ranking. If the name search finds nothing, start with verification.

Is your profile verified, or still pending?

Google says only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search. If verification was never finished, or a postcard, video or code is still waiting, the profile will not show properly. Open the dashboard and finish whatever step it asks for. If Google says there are no more ways to verify, read our guide to getting past "No more ways to verify", which covers every route that is still open.

Was the profile suspended or limited?

Google says a profile that breaks its guidelines can be disabled or suspended, and then it will not show to other people until the issue is fixed. Google notifies the account that manages the profile, so check that email inbox, including spam. Some suspended profiles still appear but cannot be edited, and some disappear completely. Either way, the fix is to find the reason, correct it, and appeal through Google's appeals tool. We cover that step by step in a separate post on suspended profiles.

Is there a duplicate listing?

Google's rule is one profile per business. Duplicates often appear when a business moves, changes its name, or when someone, maybe a past employee or an old marketing company, created a second profile years ago. Google may show the wrong one, or neither. Search Maps for your name, your phone number and your old address. If you find a duplicate you control, it can usually be removed from your account. If you do not control it, suggest an edit on Maps marking it as a duplicate, or contact Business Profile support.

Did you pick the right primary category?

Your main category tells Google what you are. Google's guidelines say to use as few categories as you need, and to make them as specific as possible. A roofer listed as "Contractor" competes with every type of contractor and may not show for "roofer near me". Pick the most specific category that describes what your business is, not everything it does. Add a few secondary categories only if they are real parts of the business.

Do your name, address and phone match everywhere?

If your profile says one phone number and your website says another, or your old address still sits on Yelp and Facebook, Google is less sure which details are right. Make the name, address, phone and hours the same on your profile, your website and the main listings. Small differences like "St" and "Street" are fine. A different number or an old address is not.

Is there extra wording in your business name?

"Smith Plumbing, Best Emergency Plumber Knoxville" is the kind of name that gets profiles in trouble. Google's guidelines say the name should be your real name, as it appears on your sign, website and paperwork, and that adding taglines, phone numbers or location details can lead to suspension. It may help for a while, then cost you the whole profile. Use your real name only.

Do you hide your address as a service-area business?

If you go to your customers and hide your address, which is what Google's guidelines ask service-area businesses to do, your profile will not show as a pin at a street address on the map. You can still appear in search results and in the map listings for the towns you serve. This trips up a lot of plumbers, cleaners and mobile trades who expect a red pin. It is normal. Just make sure your service areas are set to the towns you really cover. Google's guidelines say they should not reach much farther than about two hours' drive from your base.

Why do I show up near my shop but not across town?

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
  • Distance: how far you are from the person searching.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, including reviews and links to your website.

So a profile can rank well a few blocks away and not at all ten miles out, where closer competitors win. That is not a fault you can fix. You cannot change distance, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. You can improve relevance and prominence.

Did you just verify or edit the profile?

Patience is part of it. Google says edits can take up to 3 days to appear, and rankings for a new business can take up to a month to show in search results. If you verified last week, give it time before changing more things. Lots of edits in a row can also send a profile back for review.

Is your profile complete enough to compete?

Google says businesses with complete, accurate info are more likely to show in local results. Fill in every section you can:

  • Hours, including holiday hours
  • Services, with short plain descriptions
  • A real description of what you do and where
  • Your website link and phone number
  • Real photos of your work, team, vehicles or storefront

Are reviews and activity helping you?

Reviews feed prominence. Ask happy customers for a review, make it easy with your review link, and reply to every review, good or bad. Never pay for reviews or offer a discount in exchange for one. Google treats that as fake engagement and can remove reviews or restrict the profile. Adding new photos and posts now and then also shows people the business is active.

A quick checklist

  1. Search your exact name in a private window, with your town.
  2. Check the dashboard for pending, unverified, suspended or disabled notices.
  3. Search Maps for duplicates by name, phone and old address.
  4. Pick the most specific primary category.
  5. Remove extra words from the business name.
  6. Make name, address, phone and hours match your website and listings.
  7. Set realistic service areas if you hide your address.
  8. Fill in hours, services, description and photos.
  9. Ask for reviews and reply to them.
  10. Give edits a few days before judging the result.

Why does my business show on Google Search but not on Google Maps?

Often it is the address setting. If you are a service-area business with your address hidden, you will not appear as a pin at a street address, though you can still show in map results for your area. It can also be distance: Maps leans heavily on how close you are to the searcher. Check your service areas and search Maps from a few spots around town.

How long does it take for a new Google Business Profile to show up?

Google says edits can take up to 3 days to appear, and rankings for a new business can take up to a month to show in search results. Finish verification first, fill in every section, then give it time. Avoid making lots of changes while you wait, since big or repeated edits can send the profile back for review.

Why did my Google Business Profile disappear suddenly?

Check your dashboard and the email on the managing account first. A sudden drop often means a suspension, a request to verify again after an edit, or a duplicate Google merged or chose instead of yours. Recent changes to your name, address or category are common triggers. If there is no notice at all, search your exact name in a private window before assuming the worst.

Can I pay Google to show my business higher on Maps?

No. Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads can place an ad above the map results, but that is advertising, not your profile's ranking. What you can do is improve relevance and prominence with a complete profile, the right category, matching details everywhere, real reviews and a clear website.
